A Path Forward

Earlier this year, our video team met a woman we still only know as “Grandma.” Our team interviewed her for Mission India’s brand-new short film, The Path. It was clear that her story would blow us away when she opened with this line:

My life has had no happiness since I was born.

At the end of the interview, our cameraman looked around and said, “I think that’s the best interview I’ve ever done.”

Grandma was born without a father. Soon after, her mother disappeared, leaving her in search of a better, easier life. She moved in with her aunt—who already had her own children and didn’t have space for more.

Grandma’s early years were defined by abandonment.

As soon as Grandma was old enough to work, she was put out in the fields. She rounded up cattle and collected dung to sell. When she went home for the evening, her aunt reminded her that her earnings were all she was worth.

And it wasn’t much.

But for Grandma, that was just the beginning.

To this day, Grandma has no idea how old she is, but she’s certain that she had her son at a young age. He was her whole life. After he got married, things took a turn for the worse.

Her daughter-in-law revealed herself to be selfish and abusive. Slowly, the young woman tore down her husband’s self-esteem and the life he was trying to build for her. Finally, a few months after Grandma heard that she would soon have twin grandsons, her son took his own life.

Her daughter-in-law disappeared just a few months after giving birth. It was like Grandma was watching the story of her life unfold again.

Reflecting back, Grandma told our film crew, “I suffered beyond what God can bear.”

Soon, she was working harder than ever at three jobs: tamarind drying, rag picking, and dung collecting. But with two baby boys to feed, clothe, and house, her hopelessness was consuming her.

Then, her grandsons grew into teenagers… and met Vijay, a Children’s Bible Club leader from their very village.

The boys, Naveen and Praveen, began hanging around Vijay. They played sports with him, tried new instruments, and attended his Bible Club with a consistency that shocked Grandma.

And as her grandsons grew, so did she. Vijay spent time with her—listening to her struggles, praying for her, and encouraging her.

For the first time, she believed she wasn’t alone. Vijay reminded her that when she was orphaned, exploited, and left to feed her grandchildren alone, there was a God who never left her. God stood with her every step of the way.

Vijay encouraged her to be a difference maker for her grandsons… and that started the family on a whole new journey.

In two short weeks, you can view the rest of Grandma’s story. On Monday, October 19, 2026, tune in for the global premiere of The Path, Mission India’s brand-new short film about Grandma’s family and the man equipped by people like you to show them a new path forward.
