How to Find Hope When the Future Looks Bleak
Do you ever feel stuck? Have you felt like nothing will ever change, like the future is so bleak you don’t even want to think about it? Aida did.
Aida was a very bright nine-year-old girl—bright enough to know her life would likely always be full of hardships. Her dad worked as a daily wage laborer, which meant they lived hand-to-mouth. Each day, Aida prayed to her family’s idols, went to school, helped her mother with chores, and hoped they’d have something to eat that night. For Aida, there was little hope for the future, and joy was practically a foreign concept.
Often, Aida asked herself, “Will there ever be more to my life than these same struggles?”
A glimmer of hope came when a Children’s Bible Club started in Aida’s village. She was excited to join and get help with her schoolwork, but she received so much more.
At the Bible Club, Aida was immersed in a welcoming and encouraging environment. Rumeha, the Bible Club’s leader, made each child feel as if they belonged. Although the action songs, Bible stories, and prayer time felt unfamiliar to Aida, she left each afternoon with more peace than when she arrived.
Soon, Aida began praying to Jesus on her own before meals and at bedtime. Aida continued taking steps of faith, talking with Rumeha about the Bible and attending church services with her. As she did, her apathy and despair slowly melted away, replaced with genuine hope and peace.
Aida’s parents saw her new positive outlook and her consistent devotional times praying to Jesus. They began attending church to learn more about Jesus, and soon they, too, began experiencing newfound peace.
Before Aida began following Jesus, she had no hopes or aspirations for her future. Now, thanks to the Bible Club, she sees a life filled with possibilities instead of struggles. Aida dreams of becoming a teacher and is working diligently towards her goal. Even though she knows she’ll still face hardships, she remains confident, knowing she has hope and purpose in Christ.
