Our Adult Literacy Matching Challenge is starting this month, and I want to share a story with you that shows just how much Adult Literacy Classes mean to people in India.
Last year, there was a woman named Sanchita whose whole community worked in tea gardens in northern India. Over time, she had started to notice that she and her husband were receiving different types of bills at the end of the workday, but she didn’t know what it meant.
Then Sanchita joined an Adult Literacy Class, where she learned to count, read, and write. Soon, she figured out that her husband was getting paid more than her—in fact, her whole community were all getting different rates for the same work!
Sanchita confronted her manager for his dishonesty, and soon, her whole community was receiving fair pay.
When we pray for God’s Kingdom and will to be done “on Earth as it is in Heaven,” I believe this is what we mean: for God’s love, justice, and mercy to come now, into the ordinary lives of people like Sanchita, so that they can change their communities in His name.
So with our Adult Literacy Matching Challenge kicking off this month, will you pray with me?
- That God would continue to bring the Kingdom of Heaven into the lives of Adult Literacy students who are reaching 5th grade-level literacy right now.
- That God would use the Adult Literacy Classes funded by this challenge to reach more communities in India than ever before.
- That our partners in the U.S. would be encouraged by Adult Literacy students in India to look for ways to bring the Kingdom to those around them.
