When Addiction is Ruining Your Family & Future

Have you ever felt too far gone for God to redeem? Or maybe you were the victim of circumstances beyond your control, and you felt hopeless that life would ever get better? Thankfully, the Bible gives a resounding answer to this struggle. No one is too far gone for God. John 3:16 tells us that whoever believes in Christ will be saved. Not the “righteous.” Not the ones who manage to clean up their act on their own. In case that’s not enough reassurance, read the parable of the prodigal son in Luke 15. Jesus makes it clear; God’s welcome is inexhaustible and His love is immeasurable.

Just like the father in that parable, God will go to great lengths to show His children that He loves them and He wants a relationship with them.

Brisha knew what hopelessness felt like. She was the third of six daughters, but all her father Rajit wanted was a son. As long as she could remember, her dad had been an absent alcoholic who wasted his wages on alcohol. Modaki, Brisha’s mom, worked in a carpet factory 20 miles from their home, but her income alone wasn’t enough to provide for their family.

Then Modaki took out a loan for a taxi, hoping to give Rajit a means of providing for the family. But Rajit failed to make the loan payments and did not drive the taxi regularly. Eventually, Brisha and two of her sisters were expelled from school because their mom couldn’t afford to pay their enrollment fees.

Brisha tried to use her books to study and teach herself at home, but she quickly became frustrated and gave up. Children who used to be her friends now mocked her for being a school dropout. Brisha felt her future slipping away, and she had no idea how to stop it.

Everything changed when Brisha discovered a Year-Long Children’s Bible Club meeting near her home. She began attending every day, and Ahna, the Bible Club’s leader, helped her grasp the subjects she was struggling to understand. Brisha felt hope growing within her! Modaki noticed the difference the Bible Club was making for Brisha, so she enrolled her sisters as well.

After Ahna discovered that Brisha and her sisters weren’t attending school because of their finances, she found a way for all six sisters to re-enroll in school! Modaki is grateful for the difference that Ahna and the Bible Club made in her daughters’ lives. Brisha is delighted to be back in school and looks forward to the Bible Club each day.

Pray

  • God is using Ahna and the Bible Club to show Brisha and her family that He loves them, but they have yet to receive salvation. Pray that they will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus.
  • Pray that Rajit will find freedom in Christ and overcome alcoholism.

Take Action

  • Pick someone who is close to you but far from God, and show them God’s love in a practical way this week. Mow your neighbor’s lawn. Bake cookies for a grieving family. Send a card to a friend just because you thought of them.
