Determined to Learn, Despite Opposition
Nilsa was an illiterate woman who cared for the home while her husband, Somik, was a daily wage laborer. Somik earned a decent income, but unfortunately, he spent over half of it on wine. This created many issues in their finances and their marriage. Whenever Nilsa tried to talk about Somik’s drinking problem, Somik would abuse her. Nilsa wished her life could be simple.
Nilsa decided to take things into her own hands, knowing an education could make her life easier. When an Adult Literacy Class started in Nilsa’s village, she was one of the first to join. Sadly, Somik did not want Nilsa to participate. Nilsa tried to persuade her husband to let her learn but he stood firm. Despite her husband’s protest, Nilsa attended the Literacy Class in secret, knowing it would improve her life.
At first, Nilsa struggled to learn the alphabet and numbers because she couldn’t study at home where her husband would catch her. Despite her cautiousness, Somik eventually learned that Nilsa was attending the Literacy Class and scolded her. And yet, she was determined to learn. Nilsa kept attending the class, and over time, her hard work began to pay off—she was learning to read, write, and count.
Nilsa also had a chance to attend a special training offered through the Literacy Class, where she learned about good hygiene, the importance of cleanliness, and habits to maintain a healthy lifestyle. She used this new knowledge to improve her household. She now stays more organized and planted a small garden! After witnessing Nilsa’s new skills in action, Somik felt guilty for being unsupportive. He even started to stay away from his drinking habit.
During her time in the Literacy Class, Nilsa also heard the Gospel and now attends church whenever possible. Will you pray for Nilsa and Somik’s salvation?
