Kishu’s Life is Suddenly Much Brighter!

Kishu is a hard-working husband and father in his mid-forties – a daily laborer who readily takes on all sorts of jobs to support his family. His wife and two daughters also work in the fields and sell produce to help supplement his income; however, it never seems to be enough to cover even their basic needs.

As a child, Kishu longed for an education but never had the opportunity to attend school. This made him feel insecure, with no hope for a better future. Kishu had given up on his dreams of reading and writing in the Nepali language as he assumed no one could teach him at his age.

Every day was a struggle to survive as there was never a guarantee of getting work. To help him cope with life’s stress and disappointments, Kishu turned to tobacco and alcohol. Fortunately, Kishu met Prasham, the leader of an Adult Literacy Class, who happened to live in his neighborhood and life suddenly looked much brighter!

Prasham explained the Literacy Class to Kishu and shared how his goal was to help students improve the quality of their lives through education. He also told Kishu that many of the students were just like him – adults who were not given the opportunity to go to school during their childhood – and assured him no one is ever too old to learn.

Kishu was very excited when he learned about the class and immediately enrolled. Prasham began teaching him the alphabet; however, learning the letters was difficult for Kishu and his progress was slow. It took a few months for him to gain self-confidence, but now Kishu can read, write, and even sign his name!

In addition to reading and writing, Kishu loved listening to the Word of God and songs about Jesus. He learned Bible verses and how to pray. Through the Literacy Class, Kishu came to know Jesus as his Lord and Savior and received God’s gift of salvation.

Kishu participated in a special program that taught him the importance of health, hygiene, and sanitation. He now understands how nutritious food can impact health and how cleanliness can help his family prevent illness. With a new understanding of healthy living, Kishu stopped using tobacco and drinking alcohol. And, with his new skills and education, Kishu qualified for a new, full-time job with the state government as a gardener.

Kishu’s life now is better than he ever imagined, and he is so thankful to know Jesus. He is sharing God’s love with his family members and many have come to know and follow Christ through him. Please pray for Kishu and his family, that they will stand firm in their faith and continue to grow spiritually.
