Support the Persecuted

Stand With Manipur

In May 2023, Christians in the state of Manipur experienced violence, destruction, and persecution. Many were displaced from their homes, and the unrest and uncertainty continue today. It's a critical time to stand with the persecuted Church!

The Response from
Mission India

The President and CEO of Mission India, Todd VanEk, shared an update about the situation in Manipur when the violence first began. Watch the video below to learn how Mission India responded.

The Situation In Manipur

Members of the Kuki and Naga tribes – some of India’s most disadvantaged groups – launched a protest against the extension of their benefits to the dominant Meiteis. Extending these benefits to the Meiteis would mean they would get a share in education and government jobs reserved for Kukis and Nagas. This is a point of contention that turned to violent outbursts. Check out the following article for more information on what started the violence.

As violence broke out, the Meitei community raided homes and churches, burning them as they left. Many of these homes and churches belonged to Christians in Manipur, displacing them to the jungle and then to army and state government shelters. Today, Christians in Manipur remain at risk, and many who fled from their homes in 2023 still feel unsafe returning.

In short, yes. Many of our partners in Manipur had their homes destroyed and their families displaced. Their churches were burned and their leaders were relocated. Many of those displaced or relocated had to move into hastily constructed relief camps.

To stand alongside affected families in Manipur, we used our network on the ground to distribute Relief Kits and provide support in other ways. Relief Kits met basic needs like blankets, rice, and more.

Once urgent needs were met and violence became less frequent, Mission India’s programs were able to help families rebuild. Children who missed school to avoid danger were able to catch up on their studies through our Year-Long Children’s Bible Clubs. Adults who couldn’t find employment in their newly vacated villages were able to develop entrepreneurial skills in Adult Literacy Classes. Our programs continue to support families’ long-term needs today. Read more here.

Now, we encourage you to pray that God would work miracles for those who have been impacted by the violence in Manipur. While some families are adjusting to a new normal, others are still living away from home, afraid to return. Pray that their basic needs will be met, for Christians in Manipur to stand strong in their faith, and that God would move radically in the hearts of unbelievers in Manipur.
