Have you felt sad recently? Perhaps you recently lost a loved one or you are facing serious illness. There are many possible causes of sadness in life, but only one lasting cause of joy—namely, God’s infinite love.
You can be sad and joyful at the same time. Joy is more than a passing emotion. Loving Jesus and being loved by Jesus produces lasting, eternal joy. Joy in belonging to Jesus can penetrate every sad situation. Thus Nehemiah instructed Israel to stop being sad: “Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10b). And in Ecclesiastes 5:20, we read, “They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.” Jesus certainly did not enjoy his suffering and death. However, he kept going “for the joy set before him” (Hebrews 12:2b).
As you pray for India by following this prayer guide, you become a “joy-giver” for India. God has promised that when we pray, He will surely hear and answer us. Many have had loneliness driven from their life in the newfound joy that they have, in spite of the sometimes very difficult circumstances in which they live. They know they belong eternally to Jesus, both body and soul.
As you endure sadness, and we all do at times, remember the joy of the Lord! The fact that God loves us so much that He gave his son’s righteousness to us penetrates life’s sorrows with a kind of joy that has no end; the joy that sustained our Lord through His suffering and death.
