Today is Ascension Day, when we remember the last words that Jesus spoke before ascending into heaven:
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit is come upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
This isn’t just history. This is our reality today and every day as we pursue our mission is to help India’s believers fulfill Jesus’ prophecy and reach all of the ends-of-the-earth people in India.
Earlier this week, India’s newly elected Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, was sworn into office. We don’t yet know if the new political power in India will increase the obstacles to our “ends of the earth” objective. The latest issue of the Economist declares Modi to be India’s new “strongman” who will reshape Indian politics. The Economist expresses the hope that Modi will forsake his radical Hindu alliances because he already has an absolute majority in Parliament and does not need the support of religious extremists. It also presents this as the number one danger – that Modi will turn out to be more of a Hindu nationalist than an economic reformer.
We don’t know what will happen next. But we do know Jesus reigns. He holds the hearts of rulers in His hands. Whether or not the persecution of evangelistic workers becomes a bigger problem, we trust Him to pursue His agenda for India.
