‘For my yoke is easy and my burden is light’

Overwhelmed young widow discovers a Savior who cares for her needs

As Church Planters bring the Gospel into unreached communities, India's people are discovering new hope and joy.

February 10, 2010

Mayana’s husband died several years ago, leaving her with three young children to raise alone.

She was able to get a job—but her co-workers looked down on her for being a widow.

In India, widows are marginalized, even viewed as cursed.

With no family to help carry her burdens, Mayana felt isolated and overwhelmed.

Then two Mission India Church Planters came knocking on her door. Vijaya and Sumati were visiting homes in Mayana’s village, sharing the Gospel and offering to pray with families.

Mayana had never heard of Jesus—but she welcomed the chance to talk to someone about her fears and worries.

Vijaya and Sumati shared from the Scriptures and encouraged Mayana to cast her burdens on the Lord. Then they spent time together in prayer.

As Sumati prayed, Mayana felt joy and peace creep into her heart. She asked them to visit her every week for prayer.

Today, Mayana knows the truth of Jesus Christ's promise in Matthew 11:30: “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” She eagerly tells others about the Savior who is carrying her burdens. She says her children are doing better in school now and her co-workers no longer treat her badly.

Mayana is saving money each week. Even the health problems she once struggled with have disappeared!

Her family attends worship services each week and Mayana and her children plan to be baptized soon.
